Several people have asked me how I made these so I figured a blog post was the easiest way to tell everyone.
The wall over my bed was way too bare so I decided to make something fun to hang. I’d seen chevron paintings on Pinterest and decided to put a sparkly spin on that idea. I made a trip to the craft store and picked up the following supplies:
- 3 18×24 canvases
- A TON of Glitter
- Spray Adhesive
- Spray Latex Sealant
- 2″ Wide Painters Tape
- Drop Cloth
Be sure to buy a lot of glitter. I bought all the light blue glitter they had so I knew I wouldn’t run out. I ended up using two 8 oz bottles and one 4 oz bottle. I also picked the latex sealant because in my experience, acrylic sealants tend to yellow, even if the label says “non-yellowing.
This project was actually really easy and quick, the only tricky part was figuring out how to draw the chevrons. I did some googling and learned it is easiest to do if you split the space up into squares. Since I didn’t want to draw squares all over the canvases, I decided to make a stencil. I used some card stock and drew 3″ squares. Then I drew the diagonal lines that make the chevron design.
I cut out the stencil then stenciled it onto the canvas to use as guidelines for the painters tape.
Next, I put on the painters tape, which was the most tedious and time consuming part of this project.
Now for the fun sparkly part! I put the canvas down on a drop cloth. Normally I would do this part of the project outdoors but it is freezing out and I bought the drop cloth and low odor adhesive and sealant so I could stay in the warmth of my apartment.
I sprayed the adhesive one section at a time so I would have time to apply the glitter before it dried. I sprinkled on a lot glitter after spraying the adhesive. I mean A LOT of glitter. After doing all the sections, I let the glue dry for 10 minutes then tipped the canvas onto it’s side to get rid of the excess glitter. Tip it over some time of container so you can reuse the glitter. The glitter layer was a little thin for my taste after the first round so I did a second coat of glue over the existing glitter and sprinkled on more sparkles.
After the second coat for glue and glitter, I let the canvas sit for 30 minutes before taking off the painters tape. Then I put it aside to dry for 24 hours.
After letting the canvas panels dry for a day, I sprayed two coats of the sealant on the canvases.
Now I just need to tackle the task of hanging them over my bed evenly.
I’m sorry if I didn’t do a good job explaining it or made it seem confusing, but I promise it really is an easy project. I’m here if you have any questions!
