I have previously posted about confetti glasses and wine glasses I had made, and since I had some free time a few weekends ago I decided to make another set to add more fun and color to my collection.
Supplies Needed:
- Acrylic Enamel Paint – found in any craft store
- Glasses of your choice
- Thin, round paintbrush
I started out by picking out the colors and shades I wanted to use on my new glasses. You have to be sure to get Enamel Acrylic paint because it bakes onto the glass and will be dishwasher safe. A regular acrylic paint won’t bake on and will simply wash off in the dishwasher. I really like the Martha Stewart Craft Paints (which will bake on), but there are also tons of other brands and colors of enamel acrylic paints out there to choose from at your local craft store. I had to mix and match brands so that I could get the shades I wanted to use. I used 3 shades of each color for more dimension.
I also picked up a set of 4 glass tumblers (the 5th blue glass in the pictures is one from the previous set that I made) at Walmart for $2, which is a deal you really can’t beat! They also have great stemless wine glasses that I used in my previous post.
Before painting, I always make sure to wash and thoroughly dry the glasses to remove any residue that might be present. Then I simply use a thin round brush to paint on the little dots. It really is an easy process, but can be time-consuming. You may have to apply a second coat to the lighter shades to make them more vivid and bright. I have seen posts where people used the plastic tip end of the brush to stamp on the dot, but I found that technique left a raised bubble. Brushing on the dots leaves a smoother surface. I tried to make the dots denser at the bottom, with them fading off as they move up the glass, but you can design them however you like. And, don’t worry, if you mess up, you can always wash off the paint (before baking) and start over!
Once you are done painting and happy with the finished product, you have to let the paint cure. Be sure to read the label on your paint bottles to find the proper cure time. I let mine cure for 24 hours to be safe since I used different brands with different cure times.
Once the glasses have cured it is time to bake! This is the process that makes the glasses dishwasher safe and is the reason the enamel acrylic paint is so important. Place the glasses on a cookie sheet and place them in a cool oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. When the oven is preheated, set the timer for 30 minutes. After those 30 minutes have passed, turn off the oven, but leave the glasses in the oven to cool down. The glasses have to heat up and cool down slowly to avoid breaking. I leave mine in for at least an hour to cool down before taking them out. Once the glasses are cooled down, you now have your very own dishwasher safe confetti glasses! Enjoy!
